Sometimes you see a YouTube video so incredible you just have to watch it again. And then you want to slow it down. For example this video from magician Shin Lim.

The guy is incredible. I had to slow the video down just to make sure what I was seeing was actually happening.

The hands down best way to slow down a YouTube video is a Chrome plugin: Video Speed Controller – Video Speed Controller

There are a few reasons why Video Speed Controller is amazing.

  1. It works on ALL html5 videos. Wistia, webinar replays, YouTube, it does it all.
  2. It is small and stays out of the way. I don’t want a plugin toolbox, I just want a little tool, and it works perfectly.
  3. It is free. 💰

How it works is whenever it detects a HTML5 video on the page, it overlays a set of faint white controllers in the upper left corner. Using the + and -, you can slow the YouTube video down to a tenth of the speed or all the way up to 20x.

The only issues I have with the plugin, are there is no sound if you go slower than .5 which makes sense, it is just annoying sometimes.

Also, if the video is embedded somewhere in a small size, the YouTube title and overlay obscure the controls, so you have to click through to YouTube to slow it down. Neither are deal breakers.

I use it everyday to speed up and slow down YouTube videos, and I love it. It is free, works flawlessly. Download it now.
